Okay. They're Here. Now What?
It's not the end of the world. It can sure feel like it, though, when you realize that it's four o' clock in the morning and you never want to shut your eyes again. The first thing you need to do before anything else is inform your landlord of your problem. He or she should know the next appropriate steps and will tell you how to proceed. Most likely, they will tell you to immediately rid yourself of your mattresses if they don't have covers on them. If they do, open the covers and check for red spots. You should also sanitize every item of your clothing and all your bedding in hot water.
Extermination Tactics
You have two options in freeing yourself of your night-time pests and they depend on the severity of your infestation. You or your landlord can purchase bed bug sprays and attempt to kill the bugs yourself. It's probably a more permanent solution to go the professional route, however. Seek out exterminators who specialize in beg bug removal. It may be pricey but your landlord should offer to cover the costs.
Your exterminators will explain the process to you. It can take anywhere from two to six visits for a bed bug problem to go away and your home shouldn't be sprayed more than once every two weeks due to the intensity of the chemicals. Uh oh. Unless you want to brave the bed bug massacre, you may want to vacate your home for a little bit.
Last Resorts
You never want to be forced out of your home, especially by something the size of a pencil's tip. Unfortunately, it may be unavoidable. Hopefully, you'll vacate your home while the spraying is going on and be problem-free in no time. But that may not always be the case.
Many people try and try to get rid of bed bugs to no avail. It's not common but it happens. If that is the case, then you need to have a look at your lease. Is there a pest clause? Many leases now contain riders that directly address what happens in the case of a bed bug infestation. If there isn't any possible way to rid yourself of these pests then your landlord should be understanding. Be sure to check your lease for this such clause before you sign it and move in. Avoid dealing with a possibly unreasonable landlord and protect yourself from being a victim!
