We'll Help to Get Your Cat Moved – Part Two

Don't forget to read Part One of We'll Help to Get Your Cat Moved from Moving Squad before you go on.

The Move
On the big day, it's suggested that you quarantine your cat in a secure and small room like a bathroom or a large closet when moving out. Have you ever had guests come over and your pet makes a run for it and hides under the bed? It can be stressful and make your cat anxious to see people coming in and out of your home. You also want to avoid any situations where a mover accidentally leaves a door open. Don't go in the room to get your cat until everything is out of your home and the movers are gone. Place your pet in the carrier and put a towel over it. Cats and dogs are very different in this way. A dog may like watching trees and buildings go by out the car window, but it is quite the opposite for a cat.

Are you staying in a hotel? Call ahead to make sure the hotel is pet-friendly and alright with you bringing along your cat. Be sure to check out the room upon your arrival before letting your pet in the room. Check all the smaller spaces and possible hiding spots to ensure there aren’t any unsafe places your cat shouldn’t wander to.

When you arrive at your new home, do exactly what you did when you left. Secure your cat in a small room. Inspect your new place and look for things like mousetraps, open windows, bugs or any other potentially harmful situations. Try to immediately help your cat to relax by doing things like placing familiar objects like toys and food/water bowls around them. Pet your cat and try to spend some time together. You’ll be able to sense how he or she is feeling.

Make a checklist of everything you’ll be needing for the move and the trip there. Keep in mind that most cats will only need the littler box every eight to ten hours, but it’s better to be safe than sorry here. Even if you are traveling a relatively short distance, you can never be too prepared.
