Hotel or Resort Fees (Continued)
Upon arrival at the hotel, you're told about a mandatory fee for items or services that should come with your room like towels, a television or use of the hotel gym. These fraudulent hotels make themselves look less expensive online and then tell you that you have no choice to pay the extra fees, as they come with the room. You can attempt telling the front desk that you won't be needing extra towels or that you don't watch much TV anyway, but you'll probably be informed that the fee applies to everyone and you're no exception. Traveling to Hawaii or Las Vegas? The hotels here are notorious for such practices and it's always a good idea to ask about any extra fees on the phone before you book.
Useless Travel Insurance
Many kinds of travel insurance can be the key to a great trip of something were to go wrong. Some policies, however, don't do much. Pay attention the next time you want to buy a hotel room or an airline ticket online. You should also be especially aware of online agencies that automatically check off the travel insurance option when you purchase a travel package. If you want to purchase insurance, that''s the wrong way to do it. Alternatively, shop around and read the policies you see carefully. If you don't, you could find yourself out of luck and with an insurance policy that does nothing for you.
Foreign Exchange Rates
Have you ever payed with a credit card overseas? You'll find that your credit card charges you an exchange fee that is a certain percentage of the purchase price. That fee is anywhere from one to three percent, depending on what kind of card you have. Recently, however, there is another fee to be aware of as well, even if you're not traveling internationally! Many cards now have what are called foreign-transaction fees” on any purchase made with a foreign company, even if it's done in your own country and with the currency native to it. If you see that you're being charged these fees, don't be afraid to challenge your credit card. They often back down when asked about the absurdity of the charges.
